How to Remove It at Home
If returning to the store is not possible, here are the most effective ways to remove it without damaging your clothes:
- High-Powered Magnet: This is the “official” way the tag is designed to be opened.
- Tool: Use a high-powered neodymium (rare-earth) magnet. Standard household fridge magnets are usually too weak.
- Method: Place the magnet against the bulging, dome-like portion of the tag. This pulls back the internal locking mechanism, allowing the pin to be pulled out easily.
- Rubber Band Method:
- Tool: One or more thick, strong rubber bands.
- Method: Slip the rubber band around the pin of the tag (between the tag and the fabric). Twist and wrap it multiple times until it is very tight. This builds pressure that can eventually pop the pin out or loosen it enough to pull apart.
- Plastic Bag Method:
- Method: Thread a plastic grocery bag through the gap between the tag and the clothing. Wrap the bag tightly around the pin area repeatedly. The cumulative pressure from the layers of plastic can force the locking mechanism to “pop” open.
Methods to Avoid (High Risk)
- Prying with Screwdrivers: Using a flathead screwdriver to pry the tag open is difficult and carries a high risk of slipping and tearing the fabric or injuring yourself.
- Burning: While some suggest melting the plastic dome with a lighter to reach the spring, this is a fire hazard and can easily leave permanent burn marks or melted plastic on your clothing.
- Freezing: Freezing is often recommended for ink tags to prevent spills, but it is generally unnecessary for this specific pencil tag, which typically does not contain ink.
