Description
This object is a retail security tag, specifically a blue “fish” or pencil-style Hard Tag used in Electronic Article Surveillance (EAS) systems. It is designed to deter shoplifting by triggering an alarm if taken through a store’s security pedestals.
How It Works
- The Mechanism: The tag consists of a plastic body and a metal pin. The pin is inserted through the merchandise (like clothing) and locks into the body using a spring-loaded clutch with ball bearings.
- Deactivation: At the checkout, retailers use a high-powered magnetic detacherto pull the internal plunger back, releasing the pin.
Removing a Tag at Home
If a store accidentally left the tag on your purchased item, the safest option is to return to the store with your receipt so they can remove it properly. If that is not possible, common DIY methods include:
- High-Powered Magnet: Placing a strong neodymium magnet against the bulging “dome” side of the tag can often release the internal locking mechanism.
- The Knife Method: Using a serrated kitchen knife to carefully cut through the top rounded bulge where the locking mechanism is located. Once the plastic is cut, you can remove the internal spring and ball bearings to release the pin.
- Rubber Bands: Wrapping a thick rubber band tightly around the pin between the two halves of the tag can sometimes create enough pressure to pop the pin out.
- Plastic Bag Technique: Tightly wrapping a plastic grocery bag around the space between the tag halves can gradually force them apart until they pop open.
